News

We would like to address the following new services and issues to further enhance the service already provided by Lando.

Password security (Very Important)

It is of utmost importance that you never provide your password to anyone. Any email or phone call claiming to be from Lando must be ignored. We will never ask for your password information. Similar to any of the large banks we have all required information on our system.

You might have received a request during this past week to confirm your username and password for Webmail. Anyone that responded to such an email must contact Lando immediately to have their email account password changed.

Be very careful when receiving emails requesting information. Report such emails to services@lando.co.za or disregard it, but do not answer any of these requests.

You remain responsible for your information

  • Data used on ADSL services that has been compromised will be charged.
  • Spam sent from email accounts where the password has been stolen might result in the termination of service.
  • Lando servers might be blacklisted by other ISP’s resulting in mail delivery problems for all Lando clients.

Good password practice

  • Always use complex passwords by including numbers and letters as well as other ASCII characters to make password snooping more difficult.
  • Passwords must be a minimum of 6 characters long to be secure.
  • Do not use any personal information as a password such as your ID number, street name, surname, date of birth, etc.
  • Do not comply with any request for password information under any circumstances no matter how authentic it might look. Email addresses can be forged resulting in an email that appears as though it originated from Lando.

Your password security is always of primary concern to us being a responsible ISP. We will always act in the best interest of our clients.

3G Wireless Internet

You can now go mobile with Lando, using our 3G wireless Internet service. We have partnered with Vodacom for this service and will be running on the Vodacom network, which is the most widespread and stable network in South Africa.

This 3G service is ideal for the following users:

  • Where no ADSL access is available in your specific area.
  • Current dialup users that require a wireless Internet connection.
  • Users with ADSL access who also require moderate Internet mobility.

3G wireless is ideal for moderate Internet usage if you need to be connected to the Internet at all times.

3G/HSDPA is available in certain areas on the Vodacom network with speeds similar to ADSL services i.e. 1.8MBps. The service will still work outside of a 3G reception area, provided that you are within a cell phone reception area, however speeds will be similar to that achieved with a dialup modem.

Various bundles are available with Lando offering some of the most affordable out of bundle rates of R1.80 per minute.

VOIP (Voice Over Internet Protocol)

VOIP services have been available to large corporations and call centres for some time. It is now becoming available to the retail market and is an ideal solution to bring down telephone costs.

Telephone calls can now be routed via the Internet as a digital call based on data versus an analogue call based on time, resulting in substantial savings on call costs.

Internet call rates are much lower due to the fact that calls are routed over the Internet and not via the landline service. Savings of 20% - 50% can be achieved on your telephone account. An analysis of your telephone account must however be done to establish the saving you are most likely to achieve.

A business with various branches can achieve substantial savings on telephone bills by converting all inter branch calls to VOIP calls. The VOIP rates to cell phones are also similar to rates payable on a 500 minute cell phone contract without the risk of losing minutes already paid for.

This service requires a high speed Internet connection such as ADSL or 3G.

Contact Lando or click here if you are interested in savings on your telephone bill using this service and to view further information regarding this service.

Online file storage

Currently email attachments are limited to 5MB attachments per email. This limit is required to ensure the efficient functioning of the email facility. Large email attachments clog up the email servers resulting in delayed delivery times of email to all clients.

Moving large files around has always been a problem. This solution now makes it possible to do just that.

An online storage facility is also ideal for the storage of important documents such as ID documents, contracts, vehicle licenses and wills or trusts to name a few.

There are many online file storage facilities available with many features that might be required by advanced users or complex business. We however have identified a simple, no fuss solution to file storage. This facility is so easy and user friendly that you will be up and running within 5 minutes.

Benefits of this service are the following:

  • Always have a copy of your important documents available.
  • Access your information from anywhere on the Internet.
  • Information is secure with passwords and SSL certification.
  • Organize your information into folders similar to Windows Explorer.
  • 1GB of information to be stored free of charge, with very competitive rates for usage above that.
  • Large files can be moved around between users.
  • Easy to use, Easy to learn. Start using it within 5 minutes.

For your convenience, an email account called fileshare@lando.co.za has been created with password: "lando1234", to facilitate the movement of files between parties. Lando however accept no responsibility for any information stored in this account and should only be used for relaying of information and not permanent storage.

Create your own account for permanent storage of your information.

This service requires a high speed Internet connection such as ADSL or 3G for effective usage.

Online help!

Lando as an Internet Service Provider is in a unique position to assist users with computer related problems. We now have a new initiative to determine if we cannot provide even better service to you by helping with computer related issues. A range of computer related issues that are within the capabilities of the personnel at Lando could be addressed.

The service works as follows:

  • An active Internet connection is required to use this facility.
  • Download the Teamviewer program here
  • Run the program.
  • Phone Lando Support with the ID and password provided by the Teamviewer program.
  • This creates a secure Internet portal to access your computer.
  • Lando Support will log into your computer and provide onscreen assistance while you are in front of the computer making it much easier to provide assistance than over the phone.
  • Close the Teamviewer program after the call is ended. This will close the Internet portal. No unauthorized access can be gained via the Internet without this program running on your computer. The other party must also have the ID and password generated. This ID and password is never the same therefore creating a secure environment.

This service will be provided on the following terms:

  • 30 minutes free support will be provided per month for all fully paid services. A charge will be levied at R125 per hour for support above the free minutes.
  • This service requires a high speed Internet connection such as ADSL or 3G for effective usage.
  • Support will be limited to weekdays 08h00 to 17h00.
  • No hardware setup issues will be dealt with.

This service is experimental and will be tested for some time before making it a permanent part of Lando. Feel free to test the service and provide feedback regarding your experience. Lando should be your first point of contact for advice regarding your computer.

New Webmail Interface

A new Webmail Interface called Roundcube has been implemented. It can be accessed via the Lando homepage or via the link http://webmail.lando.co.za/roundcubemail

An option box has been added when logging in via the Lando homepage with Horde and Roundcube being the available options. Both webmail options will remain available for some time to come. Roundcube will be the default webmail option.

The main benefits of Roundcube are:

  • It is a lightweight webmail application resulting in webmail being faster than the existing Horde system.
  • A major benefit over the current system is the proper display of html-formatted mail. The email will display formatted as when downloaded to Outlook or a web browser, which is not the case with the existing Horde webmail application.

Take the new Roundcube webmail for a test drive. We would appreciate any feedback on your experience with this new webmail application.
